对。一杯茶可以一直加水

Duì. Yī bēi chá kěyǐ yīzhí jiā shuǐ

Yes. They keep refilling one cup of tea with hot water

从下午两点喝到晚上，没有人让你走

Cóng xiàwǔ liǎng diǎn hē dào wǎnshang, méiyǒu rén ràng nǐ zǒu

“Xiǎohuǒzi, mò jí, hēchá”

"Young man, mò jí — have some tea"

“莫急”，就是“别急”？

“Mò jí”, jiùshì “bié jí”?

"Mò jí" means "don't rush"?

对。我就把电脑关了

Duì. Wǒ jiù bǎ diànnǎo guān le

Right. So I closed my laptop

这就像在一个很大的客厅里坐着

Zhè jiù xiàng zài yī gè hěn dà de kètīng li zuòzhe

Duì! Cǎi'ěr jiùshì tāo ěrduo. Yǒu zhuānmén de shīfu

Yes! Cǎi'ěr means ear cleaning. There are special masters

在茶馆里给你掏耳朵。我也吓了一跳

Zài cháguǎn li gěi nǐ tāo ěrduo. Wǒ yě xià le yī tiào

成都人把聊天叫“摆龙门阵”

Chéngdūrén bǎ liáotiān jiào “bǎi lóngménzhèn”

People in Chengdu call chatting "bǎi lóngménzhèn"

意思是不用说重要的事

Yìsi shì bùyòng shuō zhòngyào de shì

No need to talk about anything serious —

想到什么就聊什么

Xiǎngdào shénme jiù liáo shénme

you just chat about whatever comes to mind

摆龙门阵。听起来比“开会”舒服多了

Bǎi lóngménzhèn. Tīng qǐlai bǐ “kāihuì” shūfu duō le

Bǎi lóngménzhèn. Sounds way more relaxing than a "meeting"

你猜，成都有多少家茶馆？

Nǐ cāi, Chéngdū yǒu duōshǎo jiā cháguǎn?

Guess how many teahouses Chengdu has?

一百家？

Yī bǎi jiā?

A hundred?

听说现在有一万多家

Tīngshuō xiànzài yǒu yī wàn duō jiā

They say there are over ten thousand now

一万多家？！

Yī wàn duō jiā?!

Over ten thousand?!

很多年前就是这样

Hěn duō nián qián jiùshì zhèyàng

It was like that many years ago too

有人看过旧资料，说一九三五年

Yǒurén kànguo jiù zīliào, shuō yī jiǔ sān wǔ nián

Someone looked at old records: in 1935

成都差不多有六百家茶馆

Chéngdū chàbuduō yǒu liù bǎi jiā cháguǎn

Chengdu had about six hundred teahouses

到了一九四二年，每五个成都人里

Dào le yī jiǔ sì èr nián, měi wǔ gè Chéngdūrén li

By 1942, out of every five people in Chengdu

每天就有一个人去茶馆

对。茶馆不只是喝茶的地方

Duì. Cháguǎn bù zhǐ shì hēchá de dìfang

Yes. A teahouse wasn't just a place to drink tea

以前人们也在那里见朋友

Yǐqián rénmen yě zài nàli jiàn péngyou

People used to go there to meet friends

谈工作、听新闻

Tán gōngzuò, tīng xīnwén

talk business, and hear the news

那它就是微信群、咖啡馆，还有办公室

Nà tā jiùshì Wēixìn qún, kāfēiguǎn, hái yǒu bàngōngshì

So it was a WeChat group, a café, and an office

哈哈，你说得太好了

Hāhā, nǐ shuō de tài hǎo le

可是别的城市也有茶馆

Kěshì biéde chéngshì yě yǒu cháguǎn

But other cities have teahouses too

别的城市的人也喝茶

Biéde chéngshì de rén yě hēchá

and people in other cities drink tea too

为什么成都这么慢呢？

Wèishénme Chéngdū zhème màn ne?

So why is Chengdu so slow?

问得好。我们要从两千多年前说起

Wèn de hǎo. Wǒmen yào cóng liǎng qiān duō nián qián shuōqǐ

Good question. We have to go back over two thousand years

成都的四周都是山

Chéngdū de sìzhōu dōu shì shān

Chengdu is surrounded by mountains

中间很平，像一个大碗

Zhōngjiān hěn píng, xiàng yī gè dàwǎn

and the middle is flat, like a big bowl

Xiàng yī gè dàwǎn

Like a big bowl

对。以前夏天常常下大雨，河水太多

Duì. Yǐqián xiàtiān chángcháng xià dàyǔ, héshuǐ tài duō

Right. In the past, summer brought heavy rain and too much river water

冬天又没有水，种东西很难

Dōngtiān yòu méiyǒu shuǐ, zhòng dōngxi hěn nán

winter had no water, so farming was hard

两千多年前，有一个人叫李冰

Liǎng qiān duō nián qián, yǒu yī gè rén jiào Lǐ Bīng

Over two thousand years ago, a man named Li Bing

他和很多人一起修了都江堰

Tā hé hěn duō rén yīqǐ xiū le Dūjiāngyàn

and many others built Dujiangyan

都江堰，我在书上看过！

Dūjiāngyàn, wǒ zài shū shang kànguo!

Dujiangyan — I've read about it!

有了都江堰，水就听话了

Yǒu le Dūjiāngyàn, shuǐ jiù tīnghuà le

With Dujiangyan, the water behaved

不怕没有水，也不怕水太多

Bù pà méiyǒu shuǐ, yě bù pà shuǐ tài duō

no fear of too little water, or too much

所以成都有一个很有名的名字，叫……

Suǒyǐ Chéngdū yǒu yī gè hěn yǒumíng de míngzi, jiào…

So Chengdu got a famous name, called…

天府之国！

Tiānfǔ zhī guó!

The Land of Abundance!

对。“天府”的意思是，老天爷给的好地方

Duì. “Tiānfǔ” de yìsi shì, lǎotiānyé gěi de hǎo dìfang

Right. "Tiānfǔ" means a good place given by Heaven

吃的东西什么都有

Chī de dōngxi shénme dōu yǒu

with every kind of food you need

我再问一个：成都是不是常常是阴天？

Wǒ zài wèn yī gè: Chéngdū shì bu shì chángcháng shì yīntiān?

Let me ask one more: is Chengdu often cloudy?

听说那里很少有太阳

Tīngshuō nàli hěn shǎo yǒu tàiyáng

I heard there's not much sun there

对，成都常常有云，有雾。有一句老话说

Duì, Chéngdū chángcháng yǒu yún, yǒu wù. Yǒu yī jù lǎohuà shuō

Yes, Chengdu is often cloudy and foggy. There's an old saying

四川的狗看到太阳会叫

Sìchuān de gǒu kàndào tàiyáng huì jiào

Sichuan dogs bark when they see the sun

因为它们很少看到太阳

Yīnwèi tāmen hěn shǎo kàndào tàiyáng

because they rarely see it

哈哈，太可爱了

Hāhā, tài kě'ài le

所以一有太阳

So whenever the sun comes out

成都人就马上去外面晒太阳

people in Chengdu rush outside to sunbathe

茶馆里的椅子也都搬到外面

Cháguǎn li de yǐzi yě dōu bān dào wàimiàn

and the teahouse chairs all get moved outside too

我懂了。太阳很少，所以要好好享受

Wǒ dǒng le. Tàiyáng hěn shǎo, suǒyǐ yào hǎohǎo xiǎngshòu

I get it. Sunshine is rare, so you enjoy it properly

对。成都人不是不会着急

Duì. Chéngdūrén bù shì bù huì zháojí

Right. It's not that Chengdu people can't hurry —

他们知道好东西不能赶

Tāmen zhīdào hǎo dōngxi bù néng gǎn

they know good things can't be rushed

所以，吃的有了

Suǒyǐ, chī de yǒu le

So, they had food

水也不怕了，就不用着急了？

Shuǐ yě bù pà le, jiù bùyòng zháojí le?

and no water worries, so there was no need to hurry?

这个答案很接近了

Zhège dá'àn hěn jiējìn le

That's close

不过还有一句老话

Bùguò hái yǒu yī jù lǎohuà

But there's another old saying

里面有更有意思的答案

Lǐmiàn yǒu gèng yǒu yìsi de dá'àn

with an even more interesting answer

The saying: "Young, don't enter Sichuan; old, don't leave Shu"

年轻人不要去四川

Niánqīngrén bù yào qù Sìchuān

Young people shouldn't go to Sichuan

老人不要离开四川？这是什么意思？

Lǎorén bù yào líkāi Sìchuān? Zhè shì shénme yìsi?

and old people shouldn't leave? What does that mean?

有一种说法是：年轻人到了四川

Yǒu yī zhǒng shuōfǎ shì: niánqīngrén dào le Sìchuān

One explanation is: when young people come to Sichuan

会觉得生活太舒服，就不想再努力了

Huì juéde shēnghuó tài shūfu, jiù bù xiǎng zài nǔlì le

life feels so comfortable they stop wanting to work hard

老人在四川住久了，也不想离开

Lǎorén zài Sìchuān zhù jiǔ le, yě bù xiǎng líkāi

and old people who've lived there a long time don't want to leave

所以四川太好玩，也太危险？

Suǒyǐ Sìchuān tài hǎowán, yě tài wēixiǎn?

So Sichuan is too fun — and too dangerous?

差不多。成都人自己也常说

Chàbuduō. Chéngdūrén zìjǐ yě cháng shuō

Pretty much. Even Chengdu people often say

成都是一个“来了就不想走”的城市

Chéngdū shì yī gè “lái le jiù bù xiǎng zǒu” de chéngshì

Chengdu is a city where "once you come, you don't want to leave"

我懂了。就像周末早上

Wǒ dǒng le. Jiù xiàng zhōumò zǎoshang

I get it. It's like a weekend morning

床上特别暖和的时候

Chuáng shang tèbié nuǎnhuo de shíhou

when your bed is extra warm

对！床，就是成都

Duì! Chuáng, jiùshì Chéngdū

可是，“太舒服”也是问题吗？

但也有人说：舒服的生活

哈哈，这句老话好玩的地方就在这儿

每个人听了，想法都不一样

Měi gè rén tīng le, xiǎngfǎ dōu bù yīyàng

everyone hears it differently

那我这个年纪，应该去，还是不应该去？

Wǒ juéde, nǐ qù le jiù bù xiǎng huílai shàngbān le

第一个词最重要

Dì-yī gè cí zuì zhòngyào

The first word matters most

“巴适”。意思是舒服、很好

“Bāshi”. Yìsi shì shūfu, hěn hǎo

"Bāshi". It means comfortable, really nice

巴适。坐在茶馆里晒太阳，喝着茶，真……

Bāshi. Zuò zài cháguǎn li shài tàiyáng, hēzhe chá, zhēn…

Bāshi. Sitting in a teahouse in the sun, sipping tea — so…

巴适得板！

Bāshi de bǎn!

Bāshi de bǎn!

巴适得板。我是不是有点像成都人了？

Bāshi de bǎn. Wǒ shì bu shì yǒudiǎn xiàng Chéngdūrén le?

Bāshi de bǎn. Do I sound a bit like a Chengdu local?

有一点点。第二个词是“安逸”

Yǒu yīdiǎndiǎn. Dì-èr gè cí shì “ānyì”

A tiny bit. The second word is "ānyì"

也是舒服、轻松的意思

Yě shì shūfu, qīngsōng de yìsi

It also means comfortable and relaxed

成都人会说：“这个日子好安逸哦”

Chéngdūrén huì shuō: “zhège rìzi hǎo ānyì o”

People in Chengdu say, "Life is so ānyì"

安逸。听起来比“我好累”好听多了

Ānyì. Tīng qǐlai bǐ “wǒ hǎo lèi” hǎotīng duō le

第三个词是“要得”，意思是“好的”“可以”

Dì-sān gè cí shì “yàodé”, yìsi shì “hǎo de” “kěyǐ”

The third word is "yàodé". It means "OK" or "sure"

比如我问你

Bǐrú wǒ wèn nǐ

Like if I ask you

“今天晚上吃火锅，要不要得？”

“Jīntiān wǎnshang chī huǒguō, yào bu yàodé?”

"Hotpot tonight — yào bu yàodé?"

要得！

Yàodé!

Yàodé!

你回答得太快了，一点也不慢嘛

Nǐ huídá de tài kuài le, yīdiǎn yě bù màn ma

You answered so fast — not slow at all

吃火锅的时候，大家是不会慢的

Chī huǒguō de shíhou, dàjiā shì bù huì màn de

Nobody is slow when it comes to hotpot

现在考考你。朋友问你

Xiànzài kǎokao nǐ. Péngyou wèn nǐ

Quiz time. A friend asks you

“今天的茶怎么样？”

“Jīntiān de chá zěnmeyàng?”

"How's the tea today?"

你想说“非常好，很舒服”，你怎么说？

年轻人也要上班，也会很忙

那他们怎么还能慢呢？

Nà tāmen zěnme hái néng màn ne?

Then how can they still be slow?

我觉得，成都人的慢，不是“不工作”

Wǒ juéde, Chéngdūrén de màn, bù shì “bù gōngzuò”

I think Chengdu's slowness isn't "not working"

而是“工作以后，愿意停下来”

Érshì “gōngzuò yǐhòu, yuànyì tíng xiàlai”

it's "being willing to stop after work"

就是躺在沙发上看手机，越看越累

Jiùshì tǎng zài shāfā shang kàn shǒujī, yuè kàn yuè lèi

在成都，很多人喝茶的时候打麻将

Shéi yíng shéi shū bù zhòngyào

Who wins or loses doesn't matter

重要的是“三缺一”的时候，朋友会来
